Scott's Bait & Tackle
Weekly Fishing Bulletin for: June 26, 1997
The catch of the week was a 8 pound 11 ounce 26 1/2" Fluke, caught by Albert DellaFave in the mouth of the Mullica River off Oysterbed Point on Wednesday. There is a nice picture of his fish on the counter and on the internet under the catch of the day icon. In the past week, I have heard of more stories about Fluke in the deeper water of the Mullica, and in the area of the Coast Guard Station and the Fish Factory. There are not too many fish biting in the deeper water, so fishing action in these areas is likely to be slow. However, the Fluke that have been caught, have been consistently larger than the fluke caught in the shallow water of the clam stakes on the North West side of the fish factory, and in the Grassy Channel areas. If you're still looking for action and quantity of fluke with a majority of throwback fluke, concentrate your efforts in the stakes on the incoming tide. Outgoing tides seems to produce less fish biting activity in this area. As for choice of rigs, a top and bottom rig baited with the squid and minnow combo works well in deeper water situations.

The Weakfishing has become pretty dependable in the mouth of the Mullica River. The fishing area I am referring to is just around the corner from Graveling Point and before you get to Deep Point(the point of land that has the marker pole on it). Going up the river from the bay, you want to fish along the right side of the river where the water depth goes from deep to shallow. Anchor the boat along this drop-off. Position here is critical for the fish are cruising along this ledge. Drifting vessels are not catching the fish just yet. A small hook top & bottom rig with #4 gold bait holder hooks, works well to catch these finicky weakies. The bait choices have varied from angler to angler. This week, Weakies were caught in the river on Shedders, Sandworms, Bloodworms, and live Grass Shrimp. Shrimp sales have doubled this past week, so I guess for some anglers they are working well. Fishing after the peak of the high tide, and most of the outgoing tide was the preferred fishing time for Weakies in the Mouth of the Mullica this week.

The heat this week was pretty bad, with several days in the upper 90's and one day we thought we saw 100 degrees. The bay offered some cooler temperatures by 15 degrees, which made it bearable. As this heat cooks the land, it starts a major updraft causing breezy conditions in the afternoons. It is recommended to get out earlier in the morning to avoid the heat and the wind. The fish bite better in the early morning anyway.

Many crabbers have been reporting large crabs and in good quantities this week. Time to break out the crab handlines and the scoop nets. The transition from gnats to green head flies has begun. Neither bug should be so bad this weekend as to prevent crabbers from enjoying back creek crabbing. I hope.
