Bait & Tackle
Weekly Bulletin for Thursday, August 6, 1998
The place the Fluke were caught in the Great Bay this week was the area
of the FishFactory and the 126 marker buoy. Anglers drifting the shallow
water sandbars back into the deeper water in short drift patterns were
more successful at putting Fluke in the fish box. The 117 marker buoy area
on the bay side of Tuckers Island produced good catches
with the same short drifting technique
as well as 'C' and 'D' buoys in Little Egg Inlet. The largest Fluke weighed
in this week was a 7 pound 12 ounce 26 1/2" fish caught by Jim Norton of
Mystic Island. This jumbo Fluke was caught on the ocean about one mile
off of the red water tower on the Southern end of Long Beach Island. Jim's
secret? Eight ounce
sinkers on Top & Bottom rigs baited
with minnows.
Some good
stories about both Fluke and Weakfish being caught in the Little Sheepshead
Creek this week too. Most of the Fluke were caught drifting the ocean side
of the bridge and the Weakfish have been caught in the holes on both sides
of the bridge and off of the bridge. If you are a boater, quietly and slowly
search the creek for pods of fish
on your fish finder and drop your favorite
tackle on them.
Weakfish and
3/4 pounder Bluefish were reported close along the surf near Holgate to
LBI, by anglers forced by the choppy ocean this week to fish closer to
shore. Most werefishing with a top & bottom rig baited with squid &/or
minnow. Weakfish activity in the bay is still reported as fair to
good fishing, many hits being reported using plastic baits,
like Fin-s fish and white Culprit worms.
On Wednesday
of this week, a 3 pound 4 oz Triggerfish was caught by Ted Danas near the
Fish Factory on squid and minnow while he was fishing for Fluke. If
you happen to catch a triggerfish, be aware that they are edible, with
a nice white meat. However, filleting a Triggerfish is tricky, due to its
tough skin. One pointer that helps make the job easier is to cut through
the skin first from the inside out! Stab the fillet knife into the
back of the Triggerfish where you would
normally start a cut and turn the knife blade out and cut through the heavy
skin from the inside. Once the "hide" has been cut through, proceed to
fillet the fish as normal. A couple of other Triggerfish were caught this
week too. Anglers were fishing in the area of the Clam Stakes on the North
West side of the Fish Factory in search of Kingfish and Blowfish and hooked
in the feisty fighting
Triggerfish on clam bait while chumming
with clam chum. A lack of Kingfish and Blowfish was made up with a quantity
of little Sea Bass and short length Weakfish and the occasional Snapper
Bluefish that made for an active fishing trip, but not a very productive
fish box trip.
Jamie G. was
kind enough to bring me in a Sea Robin to photograph for my fish identification
page on the internet. This was the first time that I was able to
try out this fish: it is excellent eating! You'd need at least a
9" fish or larger to get a pair of decent size finger fillets. I soaked
the fillets five minutes per side in lemon juice, sprinkled them with margarine
and Old Bay seasoning, then baked for about 15-20 minutes. Yum!--MizMo
Looks like
the only damage we'll see from Alex is a little cloudy weather this weekend.
NE - E winds this past week made it difficult to getting out there to fish,
let alone finding the critters.
