Weekly Bulletin for Thursday, August 27, 1998
About
the only activity that was good this week was Blue Claw crabbing. We have
kept fresh Bunker in the crab trap behind the store to stock a few crabs
up in the freezer for
the
winter. So, I can confidently say that the crabbing has been good. The
crabs have been larger this week and really clean with bright colors, and
since we clean them alive,
we
can tell that they are pretty full of meat too. There hasn't been
any crabbing activity news from boaters, due to the threatening weather.
Maybe, if the weather cooperates a
little
over the weekend, you can sneak in a little crabbing in one of the back
creeks.
The talk of the week has surely been Bonnie. A hurricane that has rattled
the nerves of every community on the Eastern shore of the United States.
The bad sea conditions will
continue
for the next two to three days as the storm picks up speed and moves away
from the East coast. Another few days will have to pass so that the seas
calm down enough for
safe
passage through the inlets by smaller vessels. Also, the fish are not likely
to feed after a heavy ocean swell. Fish have been known to consume rocks
and shells as ballast
to
hold themselves steadier on the bottom. A few days will have to pass so
that the fish have time to purge the shells and rocks from their bellies.
Will this be just enough time
for
hurricane Danielle to come up the coast?
A few anglers will just have to go fishing this weekend. The ocean fishing
is definitely out of the question, due to a continuing heavy swell. I am
confident that there are still
plenty
of Weakfish in Grassy Channel and the mouth of the Mullica River. The bridge
fishermen on Great Bay Blvd. continue to see and catch Weakfish in Little
Sheepshead
too.
It will remain to been seen if these fish are going to be in a feeding
mood.
I sure hope you didn't come to Long Beach Island for two weeks vacation
just to swim in the ocean! Last week, you couldn't go into the water do
to the supposed increase in
shark
activity. All right, the increase of shark sightings. This week, tremendous
undertow caused by a Hurricane a thousand miles away kept swimmers out
of more then knee deep
water.
The undertow was a 1000% more of a threat then any shark ever was. Every
lifeguard earned their keep this past week. Every night on the news, there
was reports of
many
rescues and even one day where over 100 people needed assistance in getting
back to shore.
Is Summer over? Even though the Labor Day holiday weekend doesn't officially
happen until Tuesday the 8th, for many, school is open on Monday, August
31 and other
schools
open mid week and some areas have a delayed opening until September 8th.
I feel sorry for those kids, they probably will not get out of school next
summer until July.
Those
late opening schools better not use up more then the allotted amount of
snow days!
