Weekly Bulletin for Thursday, July 23, 1998
.....and we aren’t talking about the fish! The heat wave continues here in Mystic Island, NJ. Today in the shade it was 94 degrees here at the store. People are moving verrrrrry
slooowlyyy. Many stopped in just to soak in the AC for a few minutes. I think that we are a bunch of whiners in our 95 degree temperature. How about those folks who are experiencing 100 degree plus temperatures for the last ten days. I even heard a high of 127 degrees in Nevada! Eeks, that's really hot! Ithas made it difficult to really put aneffort into catching fish, too. Goingout Early is definitely better!
The mouth of the Mullica River has been the most productive in the early morning. A few Weakfish and Fluke are caught in that area
each day. Quick trip out and a quick trip back! There has been some
grumbling about too many short fluke in the bay, but all hope is not lost! Harry Carney caught his 6 lb. 14 oz 25 1/2" Fluke in Grassy Channel on Sunday.
A few e-mails reporting on good catches this week:
"Just thought I would send you some info for your report.
Every morning this week from 5:30 am to about 7:00 am during the
incoming tide, the area to fish was straight out from Big Creek from 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile, the drift wasperfect. Using a leadhead jig 1/4 oz. white in color with a red worm and a piece of sheddar. The fishing was great, a constant little twitch produced a lot of throwbacks but a good number of keepers. The weakfish sizes were
from 26 inches down to 16 inches. A lot of fun. By 8:00 am it slowed and by 8:30 I quit. -----Hank M."
The following e-mail is a little travel from Great Bay, but nonetheless fishing information is good! =)
"7/19/98 Weakfish off the the Avalon Pier from 7:30 to about
9:30 a.m.. All 5 keepers in excess of 20 Inches. 1 weakie 24'. All were caught on white jig with white and pink tailed shad grub. Nothing at low tide, all were caught on the about half way down the peer. didn't seem to like the bloodworms much. 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs worked best, with no snap swivel, and on 8lb test or lighter clear mono. Same was true for 07/18/98 but the fish were all under 20"."---Russ Andress
John Geiser's article "Strong way to lure weakfish: Do the jig" in the Asbury Park Press on July 17, has caused a renewed interest in floating jigheads. We have a variety of sizes and styles of floating jigheads in stock if you want to try the rig that he described in the article, or you can try this: a simple
snell on a 18" leader to a snap-swivel with a weight on it, as light as you can go and still be on the bottom. Several anglers used this setup this week. We were requested to design some for the rig wall, but with all the different colors and types, we'd never have the right one made up! So it's self-tying if you want to try it out! E-mail : "They really did the trick! After weeks of only catching skates and sand sharks, we finally caught other fish! We caught 7 fluke (six shorts), one weakfish, 2 snappers, a sea robin, a sea bass, and a 24-inch brown shark...all in the mouth of the Mullica. I attribute it all to the rigs."--- Kokomo
Many anglers are heading offshore in search of fluke and cooler
temperatures. According to the buzz on the radio, they are
experiencing technical difficulties, but enjoying a day on the cool water. Some report slim pickings, others seem to be doing all right. Reports were scattered: some reported good fishing close to shore along the area off of the southern-most towers on LBI, others went out as far as the Little Egg and Garden State South reefs.
Other news: some anglers caught kingfish in Great Bay while
drifting for fluke. No news on porgies, blowfish, or seabass recently. Shark fishing. Catches of brown sharks reported, but mostly smaller fish, no big-daddies. We weighed in our first Mako for this year on Sunday. A respectable 86 lb. 63" Mako shark caught by Bob Mydosh, fishing with Dave Glebocki and Rich Wilson. The location of the catch was undisclosed, but one of the anglers likes to fish the area of the 25 Fathom hole, so it is likely that the mako was caught there.
