Weekly Bulletin for Thursday, September 24, 1998

We've been hustling around at high speed this week getting ready for the Decoy Show this weekend. The fishing scene is pretty much a repeat of last week. There are a lot of fish both in the ocean and the bays. I guess it is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right weather conditions and the right bait. Right? I guess that always holds true.
Get this, I have actually had multiple anglers tell me that they are tired of the same old catching of Weakfish and Croakers and that it's time for a change. They may be ready, but the fish just aren't, yet. Things to look forward to are Herring fishing in the mouth of the Mullica River and Striped Bass Fishing in and around the Little Egg Inlet. I just did a little research through my notes and can tell you to be patient for about 2 more weeks. Striper activity on live eels very slowly begins around the first day of October and is in full swing by the 10th. All you have to do is listen, and you will know when the Stripers are here. When the honking of the Canadian Geese fills the sky, it's time to catch the Stripers. Mother nature gives us all the signs, we just have to learn to pay attention. The Herring fishery is active now in Little Sheepshead Creek and will really be the hot ticket toward the end of the first week of October when they can be caught in large numbers for catch and release fun or for bait or the pickling jar. Yup, pickled Herring can be an awesome snack with a fork and a football game.
Fluke fishing usually tapers off around this time of the year and this year looks like no exception. A few Fluke were still caught this past week on several of the state reef sites. Some of the Fluke reports were as deep as 60 to 65 feet of water. That's where to start if your an ocean going angler. Now, to throw a wrench into the works, several Fluke are still being caught in the bays. One angler, Randy caught a couple of Fluke on the Brick Pile today, using Spearing for bait. Several 20 plus inch Fluke were caught by evening Pebble Beach surf anglers on Mackerel bait. What I am getting at here is that some of your early May fishing areas just might be worth a shot before running out on the ocean.
Lots and lots of Weakfish have been caught this week. Most of the activity is by ocean anglers in the area of Absecon inlet from 18 feet of water to the WR buoy and the surrounding 40 feet of water. Where is the WR Buoy? It's approximately 4 miles South East of Little Egg Bell Buoy. Top and Bottom rigs baited with Squid is the right bait choice for ocean fall Weakfish. Don't want to venture out on the ocean? Then the Little Sheepshead Creek could be the place to be. Anglers have been raving all week on how great the fishing has been during the evenings from the fifth bridge on Fins Fish lures and a multi- hook Mustad Shrimp rig. Bloodworms also have played an important part in catching fish. The other areas that have been hot in the past two years at this time (but not reported to me as yet) are the mouth of Oyster Creek and Motts Creek on the West side of Great Bay. Other anglers had their best catches this week near the orange marker ball closest to the Fish Factory, in the Clam Stakes on the North West side of the Fish Factory. Anchored and chumming for Seabass, Blowfish, Kingfish and Snapper Blues creates activity and thus drawing in the Weakfish. High hook was 13 fish and largest Weaky weighed in from this area was 5 pounds 8 ounces.
What? There are Blowfish around? The best catch reported this week was off of Graveling Point. Another angler reported half a dozen caught at the Brick pile in Marshelder channel. Anchor and chum, use clams, squid and Bloodworms for bait.
Sea Ya at the Decoy Show!
