Fish Identification Guide
The
Striped Killifish
This is not, as commonly thought, a baby striper--there
is sometimes confusion, the stripe pattern is horizontal. The stripe is
wider in proportion to the fishes body, and there are only 2-3 per female
striped killi. The males have 10-15, vertical stripes. These are not much
use as a bait fish because none of the fish seem to like them. See minnows, below.
The
Minnow: killifishes, cyprinodontidae, killies, minnies, mummichugs
etc.
See our article on care
and keeping Size ranges from 1 1/2" to 8". This bait fish is
used to catch a wide variety of fish, both saltwater and freshwater: fluke,
perch, freshwater bass and pickerel, etc. There are many different species. Our local variety, shown in the photo above, is actually a mummichug which thrives in brackish/saltwater.
