Fish Identification Guide

Weakfish

Weakfish
(gray weakfish, squeteague, yellowfin) Cynoscion regalis

Silvery body with dense pattern of small dark spots, and greenish back. Fins will be yellow when freshly caught, as seen above. 10 spines on front dorsal fin, back dorsal has 26-29 rays. Term weakfish refers to the soft mouth--it's very easy to lose them because the hook tears loose. Average fish around 5-8 lbs. Generally found in shallows, inlets, bays, and creeks. They eat a varied diet: shrimps, squids, mollusks, small fishes, sea worms, etc.
