Ocean-going herring. More slender and silver in color with darker back. Scales are a smoother/finer crosshatch pattern.

Dual purpose as either bait fish or food. Superb bait for the larger sport fishes such as: Tuna, Dolphin, etc. Netted or snagged out on the ocean.

Coloration deep blue green, silver sides. Prominent scales.

Spawning here in the Mullica River occurs upriver. In areas around Batsto the fishing is good in early spring.
AS of 2012, River Herring (Blueback and Alewife) are CLOSED with NO Season.
