No fish? Not quite. Still definitely slim pickings. A Fluke down in the Grassy Channel, a Weakfish in Little Sheepshead Creek...I don't think anyone spent too much time cleaning fish today. Ocean has been impassable the past couple of days due to high winds and choppy seas. The weather threatened rain all day, but never let loose. Therefore, most anglers stayed at the dock...Sea Ya

Hi all! Just an algae update from MizMo. Yes, it's still here, and as you can see from one of Ralph's reports below, it's spreading. Time to wrestle up some murky water fishing tactics, folks! This may stick with us all summer. ~ THE VOICE OF GLOOM (or should it be murk?) ~ MizMo
Aaaahhh phooo...MizMo is a doom say-er...Next she will be talking Y2K stuff. The folks in the Barnegat area are discussing the improvements in both the fishing and the clarity of the water. The Brigantine guys are talking about the decline in the clarity of the water. Maybe this tide stuff will work its way South, then outta here. Several OK fishing reports came out of the Marshelder Channel AGAIN this afternoon. Anglers hid between the islands and the mainland to avoid the rough water made by today's high wind. Things are getting better. Although I do have to admit, for a bit there, they couldn't get much worse...Sea Ya
E-mail Reports:

6/26/99:"Scott good news, we caught four nice keeper fluke. The largest was 21 inches. We caught them at about six to eight pm. Near the stink house."~From Steve and Joe

The way the wind blew, it was amazing that anyone got out to do a little fishing. Very few anglers reported anything in the store this afternoon, so keep those e-mails coming...it really helps. Thanks again folks....sea ya

6/28:"Hi Scott/Mo,
Started out to Little Egg Reef this morning, but the high wind turned
us back at the inlet. What seemed like bad fortune turned to good when we
decided to fish behind Hogate. Caught 5 keeper fluke (two 18" and one 20")
plus 13 throwbacks on the outgoing tide until the tide was 1/2 way out and
then it slowed down as the drift changed . Water was clear with very little
grass of any kind. Used high low hooks plus green Spin n Glow baited with
squid and minnow. Also, used a sea anchor to slow the drift. Most of the
fish were caught on the ocean side of the Osprey Nest Pole between the two
buoys just prior to it. Also saw some other boats pick up a couple of nice
fluke in the same area. Worth a try!!!"Referee"

6/28:" My son Michael spent the morning with his friend Joey Fumo and his father who runs the Fish Finder out of Bayside Marine in Brigantine. I caught up with them behind Brig. about 9a.m. as there was a small floatilla following the Fish Finder. Even in the stiff South wind this morning, Capt. Joe found a nice drift and really made for a nice trip for his patrons.
At one point I heard some screaming as Bill Tristram from Park Ridge NJ caught a 7lb fluke. Tim O'Brien from Harrisburg PA caught 10 fluke with four being keepers. I followed every Fish Finder drift and caught five nice keeper fluke in 2 hours. Should anyone wish to fish on the Fish Finder their trips are daily at 8am and 1pm and Joe can be reached at 609-264-0918. P.S. Don't tell too many people about the great fishing behind Brigantine.) It's funny how one guy walks through the door and tells a story of good fishing activity on the reef sites and the next guy weighs in his one and only single bite, which just happens to be a five pound Fluke. I guess it is just a matter of drifting over the right areas. The catch of the day page is worth a look-see. Five, six and seven pound Fluke! Too bad we can't shake up a quantity of them. The story of the week? The crew of the "Great Lakes" caught a 101 pound Mako Shark down in Grassy Channel in the Great Bay. T'weren't no sandbar brown shark that's for sure. Pretty cool...me thinks! Good job guys landing that critter.

Can't tell ya how much I really appreciate those E-mails. The fishing has been so difficult lately that any news is a big help. Walk in traffic through the store tell many to many tales of poor catching. Every once in awhile, an angler happens on a good bout of activity usually on the last couple hours of the incoming tide. Any action in the Great Bay is mostly smaller Fluke. The Weakfish have really slowed down. The best news is the increasing activity in the bay shark fishing. Anglers are having a few real nice run-offs that they haven't been able to stop and catching a fair amount of sand sharks in the three to four foot length. It makes for a fun evening. They guys that are reporting catches are fishing in the area of the Little Egg Inlet and are running mackerel chunk baits out in a chum slick of bunker or mackerel. One angler upgraded his rigs to heavier tackle, because some of the bigger sharks he had on ate through our light bay shark rigs. All good news.

6/25:"Went striper fishing today with eels in Little Egg Inlet area
today and didn't get anything. Fished around 120 buoy and the
marshes between there and the Coast Guard station, and up in
front of Little Sheepshead. Didn't see any stripers caught, and
only one or two weakfish. There was not much doing on the radio.
Even the flounder fishing reports are bad. Brown tide was
everywhere. I hear its up in Barnegat Bay also.
I stopped over in Grassy Channel on my way out of the bay at
about 10:30. Grassy was desolate today. There were a total of 6
boats in the entire Grassy Channel when I got there. Had one
good hit and that was it. "~Ralph Y.
6/25:"Took dad out to some of the local spots behind Brigantine and
Harrahs. Did pretty good compared to action over last few weeks.
Caught 9 Fluke, 6 keepers in the 16-19" range and 3 keeper weak

creeping into the back bays. A few friends also reported an
increase in weak fish action over the past few days.
P.S. we were on my boat the "4 of a kind" and fished the entire
outgoing tide."~Bob

Before the afternoon breeze which created choppy seas, several anglers found Fluke and Sea Bass on the Tire Reefs. The action on the Garden State South Reef sounded like it was a little better then the action on the Little Egg Reef Site. Bay action is still poor with the occasional Fluke coming out of the Little Egg Inlet. One report of Stripers out in the Little Egg Inlet gave a glitter of hope that the Bass are still in the area and that they are working the Inlet bars to stay out of the Brown water.
Sea Ya E-mail Reports:
6/23:"Sorry for the day late report but was too beat to write it last night. Fished Wed. offshore from 9 miles off the LE Bell to the AC Ridge trying to find a slammer blue. Fished an hour and a half at the Little Egg Reef Site and did manage to boat one 19" fluke. Tried another half hour at the LE Bell but no luck. Keep up the good work with your informative site."~"The Referee"

They hit everything I threw at them (squid, killie, shedder) on either a small green jig, or a green streamer. After about 3 hours, the brown outflow showed up, and the bite stopped cold. Water temp was 68 degrees."~Bill Jann "TESSEMMA"
6/22/99:"Fishing excellent in Ocean City area. Flatties in Rainbow Channel. One angler on a Lemont's Rental boat caught a 6.5 lb. 28 inch Weaky in the area of 17 th St. in the ICW in the area of the old barge. He was using a Finess Bubble gum with a long streamer of squid. Flatties have been caught on top & bottom rigs using minnows & squid, one hook has white hair or red & white hair other hook bare or with a white bead. Sea bass near 9 th St. causeway bridge. Crabbing coming in to its own & hopefully will get
better. The water is very clear."~(Fred)

The question of the day has been "Will this brown stuff EVER go away?". Sorry folks, your guess is as good as ours! The waters remain cafe-au-late. For those of you just arriving at the shore this weekend, there is more info available in our Conservation section under "Brown Tide". A few anglers are talking up the fishing a little bit. Seems like there are plenty of little Fluke around. Some were caught in the clam stakes on the North West side of the Fish Factory in the Great Bay. Others were caught in the somewhat cleared up water of the Barnegat Bay. Still, the water is very murky and the fish aren't biting real well except for the last of the incoming tide. Little Egg Reef Site was a little crowded this morning. There were a few Fluke caught, but the anglers who went armed with several baits caught more fish. The salted mackerel fillets you still have in the bait refrige work excellent for both ocean Fluke and the Sea Bass. Clams are good bait too. Sure, squid and minnows are the best bait, but a wider variety of baits can aid in catching more fish. Be sure to read the E-mails below too. There is some useful information in them. Thank you guys for the input...

Good news! Word is that there are some decent Fluke to be caught out around the area of the Little Egg Reef. So if you fish outside, it might be worth your while to ride out that way, instead of poking around in the bay and coming home with the cooler empty. Although we did have a good report of activity near the old Coast Guard station (see e-mail report below). Another angler reported some just barely keeper Weakfish in the area of the 'E' buoy in the Little Egg Inlet on the last of the incoming tide. Sea Ya

Happy Summer. You sure couldn't tell it by the weather. A cool light rain fell all day. It was much need though as both my tomato plants and front lawn sigh relief. I don't know if we actually got enough precipitation to help clean up the brown tide though. Basically, the only fishing reports were from anglers who fished over the weekend for Fluke on the reef sights. They continued to confirm the good activity.

Fishing in the Great Bay was good this rainy day if you enjoy catching sharks and skates. A few short Fluke were caught in front of the Old Coast Guard Station and an occasional Weakfish in the mouth of the Mullica River took a bait, but other then that a very skinny day on fishing action in the bay. Ocean activity on the reef sights continues to be the best bet. Several angers reported good fishing activity and enough keeper Fluke and Sea Bass to put in the cooler to make it worth the trip out on the ocean. The Little Egg Reef sight and the Garden State North reef were two of the reef sights that were reported as having good fishing....Sea Ya

Several anglers had some good reports on fishing on the ocean on the Little Egg Reef site; fine catches of Fluke and Black Sea Bass. There was a good quantity of fish, but many were of throw-back size. However, it was still, by far, the best action of the day. Frank Monaco weighed in our first Black Sea Bass of the season and it was worthy of tipping the scale. It was 5 pounds 13 ounces and 22 1/2 inches in length. Anglers reported the first Brown Sharks in Little Egg Inlet last night. As far as I know, these couple of toothy critters are the first of the season. Other sand sharks were caught as well and they are as large as four feet, providing a good sporty fight too. Need some tips in catching bay sharks?...check out the last few years weekly bulletins in June or maybe I even wrote some good stuff in the daily reports last season. If there was other action in the Great Bay, the information didn't get back to us.... Sea Ya

We had several one-fish-catch weigh-ins today. Very nice fish, but no quantities reported for the most part. We did have one happy angler report that he'd caught a fair amount of fish out near the fish factory, mostly throwbacks, but fish! A good sign. No reports from outside yet except for the one fluke weighed in from off LBI, although today's seas were calmer than they've been for the past week at 4-6ft. Tomorrows forecast is for calmer seas still, possibly 3-4 ft. Maybe this will create reasonable fishing conditions which will give anglers the opportunity to actually catch fish. We will surely let you know... Lots of talk about this "brown tide thing", MizMo worked up the skinny fer ya! Sea Ya

Still the weather threatens, but doesn't follow through...just lots and lots of dark clouds all morning. The afternoon cleared and became nice though. Most of the reports that are coming back through the store the past few days are mostly negative. Action in the Little Sheepshead Creek dropped off to almost nothing. An occasional Weakfish continues to be caught in the creek, but definitely not equal to the effort put toward catching them. Better action has been coming from the mouth of the Mullica River in the very early morning. If Fluke is your fish, the action hasn't improved a whole lot, but there was an improvement over last weeks action since Saturday. At least a few anglers are catching Fluke in the clam stakes on the North West side of the Fish Factory. Not much else to tell...Sea Ya

With the weather threatening a big rain real fast, it wasn't a real inviting day to fish on the Great Bay. A few guys were down in the Grassy Channel and said that the bay was much too white and called it a quits early. Even the action in Little Sheepshead Creek the past two evenings was poor. Basically, it was an un-fishable weekend. A few of the surf anglers attempted to wet a line, but the North East created waves crashed the weights back to the surf line no matter how heavy the weight. Wise boaters stayed at the dock and stayed dry. A few just had to sneak out and reported that they caught a some Weakfish in the mouth of the Mullica River and down in Little Sheepshead Creek. Other Bass anglers weren't stopped as they worked the Little Egg Inlet with live Eels and the banks from the Coast Guard Station around to Little Sheepshead Creek on the Holgate side. They caught a few Bass too as you can see by checking out the catch page. Best report of the weekend came by E-mail. Maybe this little storm we had will get things going again.

One really nice Striper weighed in early this morning by Bob Wenstrom, a 31 lbs. 8 oz 44" keeper caught on an eel out by the Little Egg Inlet.
Weather conditions were weird today. Many visitors reported driving through wonderful sunny weather, then hitting the area around the Farley Parkway rest area, and running into mist and rain. Needless to say, most anglers headed out to fish in the bay and creek areas. We didn't hear any reports back yet on how everyone did, so it's best to assume that fishing wasn't exactly booming out there.

Harry Gorden weighed in a 25 pound Striper this afternoon. It just goes to show you that the big Bass are out there. Harold Smith weighed in a 5 pound Fluke he caught in the clam stakes. Then the wind blew and things pretty much stopped. The wind is blowing NE which makes for a rough ocean. Anglers that fished this morning said that the seas were at least 6 foot. The Tuckerton Fish-off Bluefish tourney has been postponed until Sunday due to the wind generated rough seas. Anyone got a good recipe for crab cakes? We received an E-mail and would like to post a few different recipes in the cook book. If you would like to contribute, just send it in the fishing report. Wanted! Four more hours in a day. An eighth day in a week would do nicely. If it can be arranged, throw the extra day between Wednesday and Thursday. Thanks. Where did the action happen today? Well, I really don't know. A lack of radio chatter and no return traffic through the store to spread any details. More Striper fishing is going on then you would really believe. The occasional large Bass is being caught on the ocean beach front and boaters are catching the Bass from the 120 marker all along the banks down to Big Sheepshead Creek. Specific details on the best tide I can not provide because I haven't been paying attention...Sorry. A lot of eel sales are what clued me in as well as good worm sales to the anglers who fish up around the Barnegat light area. Sea Ya

Sounded like the action on the Great Bay was a little better then it has been the last few days. Inland Waterway...bla bla bla you have already read it 4 times this past week. Biggest Weakfish of the season was weighed in first thing this morning and it was caught in Little Sheepshead Creek. Lots of little Weakfish are being caught in the Mouth of the Mullica River on the last hour of the incoming tide at daybreak. The plastics...worms and FinS fish with a piece of Shedder, Bloodworm, Sand worm or Shrimp are what the guys are reporting back to me as what is working. Sea Ya

Oh Boy...did anyone read Jr's E-mail post below? Wow, there is one unhappy angler. He hits the nail right on the head though. If your not at the right place at the right time, then zilcho. From the little bit of catching info that I have heard, the best action for the occasional Fluke is still coming from the Inland Waterway from the 131 to the 134 marker buoy on the last hour of the incoming tide. As for the Weakfish, Little Sheepshead, Marshelder Channel and the East end of Grassy Channel are the place to be. Info is scarce on just which tide is better then another so I am going to go with the day break theory for the Weakies. Sea Ya

E-mail Reports:
6-7-99:"I fished the out going tide yesterday morning at the mouth of the Mullica got there by 9:30 am,When I first got there I picked up a 18 inch flounder, then 5 minutes later a 23 in. weak, then a few more weaks that were a little smaller, and three more throw back fluke, and two snapper blues. Then it shut down,it got to hot and got off the water by 2pm.I wish I got out there earlier.I think I will try agian today about 4pm.when it cools down some.It was nice to catch the weaks again.I thought we were going to have a steady pick yesterday then the incoming tide must haveshut things down. "~chris
6/5 & 6:"Margate//Still plenty of short, the keeper ratio is running about 7-1. Beats not catching. Invested in a "Deep Throat" tool that has saved at least 50 gut hooked fluke. I thought I'd try it and it works great, nothing but raves
from Mark the mate on the Fish N' Fun, since he is the person atually using
the tool. Every serious angler should have one. Had a nice bite yesterday
afternoon that held during the tide change, at a different location however.
Tom Kohler for the 6th time won back to back pools but the hat trick
contunues to elude him. Locals are getting nice weakies, and had plenty of small blues Friday afternoon. Keep the bait fresh. "~Capt Bill
6/6:"FISHED ALL DAY, FISH FACTORY,COAST GUARD STATION,GRASSY CHANEL.134 BUOY.WE
CAUGHT ONE SKATE WITH NO WHEELS,ONE SEA ROBIN NO FEATHERS,ONE SHARK NO TEETH,
AND ONE SORRY FLOUNDER WITH NO MEAT ON HIS BONES. END OF REPORT."~J.R.

Too hot, everyone agreed. Ninety + degrees and not a whole lot of wind either. Action in the Great Bay was pokey at best. The occasional Weakfish seems to be the story of the day. Down in the Inland Waterway between 131 and 134 marker buoys at the last hour of the incoming tide is the time and place for the occasional Fluke. Sea Ya

We need a storm! Can't believe I am asking for nasty weather, but it could be the first step to improve the back bay fishing. Action was still picky for Fluke, but a few anglers caught them in the inland waterway between 131 and 134 just before the high tide. Weakfish still seem to be biting just fine. Anglers who aren't afraid to leave the dock in the dark are catching a fair amount of Weakfish. More of the Weakies are starting to be of the smaller size. The activity is coming from the Tuckerton Bay side in Marshelder Channel and in the Great Bay in the Grassy Channel. A few anglers that work Little Sheepshead Creek on the ocean side of the bridge are finding nice fish along the ledges and holes in the creek. Bloodworms, Sand worms and Shedders are catching the Weakies equally well. Sea Ya

A lot of anglers agree that today was a great fishing day, but a lousy catching day. Some even had a hard time catching little Fluke. The bottom line is that the fish were just not biting. There really isn't much of a fall back plan either. The turn out for the JCAA tournament was great. Even though most anglers didn't bother weighing in, the buffet at Resorts casino should be a blast if it is as good as last year. So, don't forget to attend the awards ceremony and see if you can get your hands on some of those great door prizes. MizMo got the results up right away. Wow, it's well worth the effort to check out the 280 pound 97" Mako Shark on the catch page. Haven't seen a Mako that big ever at Scott's B & T. This trophy fish was caught at the 28 mile wreck. Charlie also spoke of two other escapees and a lost tuna as well. The activity he saw this morning was a hopeful sign for a good offshore season. One can hope right? Now, the ugliest fish of a lifetime goes to Ed Braun for his weighin of a 36 pound Monkfish. If I was spear fishing, I know I would have swam the other way. Ick! Make sure you check out the pics on the catch page. It's worth the download time...Sea Ya

No one came in the store this afternoon spilling the beans about this great spot to catch big Fluke. It was so quiet that there must be a Fluke tournament tomorrow...Oh yea there is! We will just have to wait and see how things pan out tomorrow. Sea Ya

Bailed out of work a little after seven, ran out on the meadows since low tide was right around 7:00pm and fed the gnats while getting a few Grass Shrimp to stock up the boxes for the weekend. Anglers have been quietly catching quite a few Weakfish on Grass Shrimp. The only reported area that this has been working is in the Marshelder Channel along the bank opposite the Brick Pile. Anchoring the boat and working the Shrimp along the ledge similar in method to catching Tautog is the trick. Shedders, Bloodworms and Sand worms are working equally well. If your not familiar with using Shedder crab for bait, be sure to check out the in depth lecture in the bait guide which can be access from the fishing page. Sorry for the late post, between writing the Bulletin, which will be put on the web after MizMo does a little editing in the morning and trying to sneak in a little dinner, the evening just few past. Good night...Sea Ya

Little Fluke continue to be the most active fish in the Great Bay. Many anglers are snickering as they ask: "Where are all of the big Fluke we were catching before the season opened?" In the inland waterway near the 134 marker buoy, this area seems to have been the most productive area the past few days for the occasional keeper Fluke. A few anglers ventured out on the ocean to see if they could find a Fluke out there. By the reports I have heard, the larger Fluke weren't out there either. This Saturday, June 5, is the JCAA Fluke Tournament and the idea is to catch one really big Fluke. The way things are looking, this is going to be one real interesting tournament. Sea Ya

MizMo took half the day off, so the catch page didn't get updated. A new first place on the Bragging Board for the Striper category, James MacBurnie weighed in a 34 pound 5 ounce 43" Bass caught in Absecon Inlet on fresh Bunker. Nice fish James. Rocky Compitello brought in a 5 pound 3 ounce 26" Weakfish from 134 marker buoy in the Inland Waterway and he also had a couple of nice Fluke in the cooler too. Most of the anglers chatted about the lack of activity in the Great Bay. Things are just a little quiet. Maybe we need a good blow to stir the action up a little.
5/31 Reports:
"Had a great day on my brothers Krusheriv Charterboat, fishing the wrecks and
catching some beautiful sea bass on clams and squid. One bass went 3.9lbs but
everything quit biting around 11am. A nice day"~Geo.Kohler
"Margate// Another excellent bite over the long weeekend starting Fri and
continuing til this afternoon when the magic left. Poll winners were in the
2-3/4 to 3-1/2 range. There is a few snappers comming aboard the Fish n' Fun
IV each trip also. Cold water has loaded the bay with skates, however when
you can find a pocket of warm water you can catch plenty of quality fish."~Capt. Bill Hoffman
"Fished on the Jazzy-one with a 82 yr. old angler (wife's grandfather)
and he out fished me! It was slim pickens in Great Bay today. Early am,
there was no
wind and barely a drift. We fished Grassey Channel, the nearby bar, around
Mkr. 139, Seven Islands and finally behind the Stink house,
One keeper fluke and one bite-off by a 2lb blue was all we managed. Today
was a day for cold beer and burgers, but not fluke catching! By the way, I
saw very few nets dipped, so I'm inclined to think others didn't do so well
either. "~Dave R.
