Fall and Spring Wild Turkey Hunting Regulations

     Non-hunting adults accompanying youth turkey hunters need only have in possesion a valid hunting license. Spring and fall turkey hunting is by permit only.

The 2006 fall turkey season consists of one six-day hunting segmetn, N, from Monday, Oct. 30 through Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006. Fall hunting hours are 1/2 hour before sunrise until 1/2 hour after sunset on the six days on which the season is open. Turkey Hunting Areas 1-11 and Turkey Hunting Area 20 and 21 will be open for hunting. Turkey Hunting Areas 12, 14, 15, 16, and 22 are closed to fall hunting.

* Bag Limit: One wild turkey of either sex per permit during the fall season. However, hunters may only take one turkey per day regardless of the number of permits the hunter holds.
* Dogs and artificial decoys may be used while turkey hunting in the fall season; however, the use of electronically-operated decoys is prohibited.
* All turkey hunters are required to have a calling device with them while turkey hunting.
* The maximum group size while turkey hunting is five hunters. Hunters may not attempt to chase or drive turkeys for the purpose of putting them in range of other hunters. However, hunters may rush a flock of turkeys to cause the flock to scatter.
* No shot larger than #4 fine short or smaller than #7 1/2 fine shot may be used for turkey hunting.
* Hunters may not use shotguns larger than 10 gauge or smaller than 20 gauge for turkey hunting.
* Fluorescent hunter orange is not required to hunt turkey.
* Properly licensed hunters may use archery tackle for hunting turkeys.
* Turkeys may not be hunted within 300 feet of any baited area.

     Immediately upon killing a turkey, hunters must complete the transportation tag on their fall hunting permit and affix it to the bird. The turkey must be taken to to an official wild turkey checking station by 7:00 PM on the day it is killed. The hunter who killed the bird is the only person who may transport and check the turkey.

Turkey Hunting Permits
  • Turkey hunting is by permit only.
  • Beginning with the 2007 turkey seasons, spring and fall turkey season applications will now be made on two separate applications; only one application may be made for each season.
  • Complete instructions will be detailed in the 2007 Wild Turkey Hunting Season permit supplement available in late-January/early February at Fish and Wildlife offices, on the website www.njfishandwildlife.com and at participating license agents.

    Youth Turkey Hunt Day
         Youth Hunters with a valid youth license who have obtained a turkey permit may begin their spring turkey season on the special youth turkey hunting day - April 14, 2007. Youth must be accompanied by and supervised by and adult 21 years or older who possesses a valid New Jersey hunting license.(The adult does not hunt on this day).
    Spring Gobbler Hunting Regulations
         Spring gobbler hunting regulations are published in the 2007 Wild Turkey Hunting Season permit supplement.

    Information
          Booklets with turkey hunting information, regulations and application forms will be available at license agents and Division offices by late January 2007. Applications will apply for both spring and fall seasons on one form. Hunters may file only one application for turkey permits. Duplicate applications will cause all applications to be void.
         The latest turkey hunting techniques are presented at several turkey hunting seminars sponsored by Fish and Wildlife or wildlife conservation organizations. These seminars focus on how to set up, calling techniques and key safety information for turkey hunters. New turkey hunters are especially encouraged to join NJFW at a seminar. Check your newspaper and the 2007 Wild Turkey Hunting Season permit supplement for seminars scheduled during March and April.
